About Handfeeding

Why should you hand feed your dog?
-
Builds a stronger bond and trust with your dog - This can help with nervous or fearful dogs to show them that positive things come from the hand of the handler.
-
Stops your dog eating their food to fast - They will only get getting a few bits in each handful while practising your obedience training.
-
Encourages your dog to pay more attention to you - You become the gateway to all the things that your dog loves.
-
Helps reduce and avoid resource guarding - The dog doesn't have a bowl to protect, all the good stuff comes directly from your hand.
-
Encourages you to train your dog regularly - Getting in all the practice to perfect that training.
-
Increase your dogs food drive to assist with training - I hear people say a lot "my dog isn't food motivated". Handfeeding will help with this as all the food they will get in the day they will have to get from you so they will be more tempted to work for it.
How to begin handfeeding?
-
Measure out your dogs daily food allowance and simply begin by letting your dog eat from your hand the frequency of the sessions is up to you.
-
Make sure to pull your hand away if they are too pushy and biting and only give them the food when they are polite.
-
If your dog is refusing to take the food from your hand, ask for a sit and try to offer as a reward if they are not interested let them go without and try again later as it may take a few days for them the begin to understand the change.
-
Once your dog understands, you will then be able to use your dogs food as a reward for training.
